Lovable Rescue Animals on Long Island Up For Adoption

Forgotten Friends of Long Island is an animal rescue group that is dedicated to the rescue of companion animals. Many of these rescue animals have been in municipal shelters for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, they have been overlooked by both the general public and by rescues. Many of the dogs in our care were homeless and were sadly waiting to be euthanized. Forgotten Friends intervenes, whenever possible, for these animals in dire need of immediate attention. And we look to place them in caring, loving homes.

Why Rescue Animals Need Our Help

Animal shelters and rescue organizations can become overwhelmed when homeless animals have nowhere else to go. Rescue organizations help provide another option for animals that may otherwise remain in shelters or face uncertain outcomes.

Forgotten Friends of Long Island focuses on companion animals in need and works to give them an opportunity to find loving homes. Through adoption, volunteering, donations, and community support, local residents can play an important role in helping animals throughout Long Island.

When you adopt a rescue animal, you aren’t simply bringing home a pet. You are giving an animal the opportunity to become part of a family.

Importance of Adopting Rescue Animals

Adopting a rescue animal is important for the following reasons:

  • Offers a second chance for animals who might otherwise not have gotten one.
  • It fights pet overpopulation and saves the lives of homeless animals.
  • Ensures you are not supporting inhumane commercial breeding facilities.
  • Helps to reduce social isolation and promotes compassion and empathy.
  • It benefits both you and the pet by lowering blood pressure and alleviating depression, anxiety, and stress.
  • It improves the overall health of animals and the environment.

If you already have a dog or a cat and are unsure of how the introduction of another animal will go, then please check out these common steps on how to best go about it.

What Should You Consider Before Adopting a Rescue Animal?

Adoption is a long-term commitment. Before bringing a rescue animal home, consider whether your household is prepared for the time, responsibility, and expenses associated with caring for a pet.

Ask yourself:

  • Does everyone in the household agree with adopting?
  • Does your home provide a safe environment for a dog or cat?
  • Do you have enough time for exercise, training, attention, and companionship?
  • Are you prepared for routine veterinary care and unexpected medical expenses?
  • If you rent your home, does your landlord allow pets?
  • Who will care for your pet when you are working, traveling, or away from home?
  • Are you prepared to care for the animal for its entire lifetime?
  • If you already have pets, are you prepared to introduce a new animal gradually and safely?

Thinking through these questions before adoption can help create a better experience for both the family and the rescue animal.

About Adopting Rescue Animals

At Forgotten Friends of Long Island, we get pleas every day about rescue animals about to die in overcrowded shelters. People have to think about getting a pet and make sure they are ready and able before adopting a pet.

Rescue animals are dying in shelters across Long Island for various reasons, but the number one reason is not spaying and neutering. It is vital for them to get spayed and neutered, otherwise they are at risk in kill shelters.

This is why it is our mission to get people on Long Island to choose adoption of a pet over shopping for one. We will help make sure you find a forever home for a pet that desperately needs one. When you adopt a rescue animal, you save a life.
